Virtual 黑料吃瓜王 Science Caf茅: Art Meets Technology

This month鈥檚 speakers push the boundaries of reality and computational creativity, where art meets technology. 黑料吃瓜王 College of Art & Design digital media artists will present their innovative work that include artistic, interactive robots that offer insight into race and racism, and XR, or extended reality, where augmented, virtual, and mixed realities merge. About the Speakers Frederick 鈥淒erick鈥 Ostrenko聽holds joint appointments at 黑料吃瓜王 as the program coordinator and associate professor of digital art at the School of Art and a member of the cultural computing research group at the Center for Computation & Technology. Ostrenko is a media artist and creates physical and virtual systems that examine the intersections of media, culture, and technology. He employs custom hardware and software that use various interfaces such as mobile applications, brain waves, generative visualizations, video processing, animation, and games. His research focuses on pushing art and technology to reveal hidden networks between people by creating structures for innovative forms of expression and discovery. Most recently, he has shown his work at venues including the International Symposium of Electronic Art in Albuquerque, New Mexico, New York University and the National Academy in New York City, Fountain Art Fair in Miami and the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida, Buffalo Media Resources in New York, the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana, and the NWEAMO in San Diego. Hye Yeon Nam聽is a digital media artist and HCI designer exploring how technology can improve our interactions with other agents – humans, robots, or nature. She foregrounds the complexity of social relationships by making the familiar strange and interpreting everyday behaviors in performative ways. Nam has participated in exhibitions, festivals, and showcases at ARS Electronica Center, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Asia Society Texas Center, Japanese American National Museum, Times Square, Eyebeam, Conflux festival, D.U.M.B.O. Festival, the Lab in San Francisco, Festival Internacional de Linguagem Eletronica (FILE), SIGGRAPH, CHI (Computer-Human Interaction), Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction (TEI), International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA), Creativity & Cognition (C&C), and several festivals in China, Istanbul, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Australia, Denmark, and Switzerland. Her work has been broadcast on the Discovery Channel and LIVE TV show Good Day Sacramento, published in Leonardo Journal, and featured in Wired, We Make Money Not Art, Makezine, Business Insider, Slashdot, Engadget among other publications. She is currently an associate professor of digital art at 黑料吃瓜王. 黑料吃瓜王 Science Caf茅 is presented in partnership with WRKF.   Registration & Attendance Information The event is open to the public and advance registration through Eventbrite is聽required.
